US to discuss sanctions against N.Korea, Iran The United States will send senior State and Treasury Department officials to Japan and South Korea next week to discuss sanctions on Iran and North Korea. US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Crowley told reporters on Thursday that the State Department's Special Advisor for Nonproliferation and Arms Control, Robert Einhorn, will arrive in Seoul on Monday and Tokyo on Tuesday. He will be joined by Treasury Deputy Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, Daniel Glaser. The US government imposed sanctions against Iran earlier this month after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution to impose additional sanctions on the country for its nuclear development. The sanctions mainly target foreign firms that have exported oil products to Iran. The United States is also working on new sanctions against North Korea, following the March sinking of a South Korean warship, allegedly by the North. The sanctions are to include freezing of assets of North Korean entities and individuals in the country. The US is expected to call on Japan and South Korea to follow suit to increase pressure on Iran and North Korea and make its sanctions more effective. 2010/07/30 09:55(JST) (JST: UTC+9hrs.)
